Farm Krumhuk Tour: Strengthening Policy and Practice in Agroecology & Organic Agriculture

On 19 September 2025, the Namibia Nature Foundation, in partnership with the Namibian Organic Association (NOA), hosted a field tour at Farm Krumhuk for Members of Parliament from the Standing Committee on Natural Resources, parliamentary staff, and the media. The tour was designed to provide firsthand exposure to diverse agricultural production systems and methods, and to introduce policy briefs that outline how Namibia can amplify its agroecology and organic agriculture sectors.

The Role of the Technical Working Group

This engagement took place in the broader context of the recently established Technical Working Group on Organic Agriculture and Agroecology (TWG‑OAA). Chaired by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, with the NNF acting as secretariat, the TWG serves as a coordinated, multi‑stakeholder platform to promote policy development, capacity building, and regulatory frameworks that support sustainable farming practices across Namibia.

Key Highlights of the Visit

  • Participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations of organic and agroecological techniques at Farm Krumhuk, including crop rotation, soil health management, composting, and other regenerative practices.

  • Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff were presented with policy briefs outlining practical opportunities and national-level measures to expand, strengthen, and regulate Namibia’s organic agriculture sector.

  • The visit included facilitated dialogue on current challenges and policy gaps, such as standard setting, market access, public awareness, and the alignment of education curricula, guided by the Technical Working Group on Organic Agriculture and Agroecology (TWG‑OAA).

  • Media representatives were actively engaged to ensure the broad dissemination of knowledge, helping to inform public understanding and build national support for organic agriculture and agroecological systems.

Strategic Outcomes & Next Steps

This tour reaffirms Namibia’s commitment to advancing more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agricultural systems. The anticipated outcomes include:

  • Collaboration between government, civil society, researchers, producers, and industry is expected to be strengthened through continued engagement within the Technical Working Group on Organic Agriculture and Agroecology (TWG‑OAA).

  • Insights gained from the Farm Krumhuk visit will help inform national policymaking by refining regulations and shaping strategies to support the growth of agroecology and organic agriculture across the country.

  • Media coverage and stakeholder participation during the visit are expected to boost public awareness and foster greater engagement in the organic agriculture sector.

  • Recommendations developed by the TWG‑OAA may be integrated into future national agricultural policies and educational programmes, supporting long-term sectoral transformation.

The Namibia Nature Foundation and Namibian Organic Association remain committed to supporting evidence‑based policy, fostering sustainable farming practices, and bridging the gap between policy and practice for agroecology and organic agriculture in Namibia.
