Bees and Trees: Communities Protect Forests Through Beekeeping

NNF, in partnership with beekeeping specialist Dr. Ortwin Aschenborn, held a two-day hands-on training in Kongola for beekeepers from the Mudumu North Complex, supported by the Dream Fund/COmON Foundation and Bengo/Kaza Arise projects. The training focused on honey and beeswax harvesting, with two advanced beekeepers stepping into trainer roles. A follow-up session included new beekeepers from Bwabwata National Park via NNF’s CAPA project, promoting cross-project collaboration.

This initiative is part of the “Bees and Trees” project, aimed at empowering communities with sustainable income through non-timber forest products like honey. With tools and access to the Kongola Honey Hub, beekeepers can now process honey and by-products into high-value items like candles and lotions. By reducing reliance on deforestation, this program helps protect forests, build self-reliance, and support community resilience.
