NNF joined global ocean leaders at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, a major international summit that took place in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025. It is the third in a series, following events in New York (2017) and Lisbon (2022), and is co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. Angus Middleton represented Namibia in a vital discussion on bridging marine policy with ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA). From unique coastal challenges to urgent calls for action, discover why Namibia’s ocean future matters
The UNOC3 brought together over 14,000 delegates from 175 countries, resulting in key global commitments for ocean action. Major outcomes included the “Our Ocean, Our Future” Declaration, over 800 voluntary pledges, and strong progress on the BBNJ High Seas Treaty. Over €23 billion was pledged to support marine protection and new MPAs, including full EEZ protection by French Polynesia. While momentum grew around deep-sea mining bans and plastic pollution, gaps remain in addressing bottom-trawling and ocean acidification. The focus now shifts to turning these pledges into real action.
