Reflecting on the Ocean in Focus Symposium: Advancing Namibia’s Marine Conservation Dialogue

In February 2026, Namibia hosted the Ocean in Focus Symposium in Swakopmund, bringing together scientists, policymakers, industry representatives, coastal communities and youth to discuss the future of the country’s marine environment. The two-day event, held on 18–19 February at the Plaza Hotel, attracted over 70 participants committed to strengthening ocean sustainability and informed decision-making for Namibia’s coastline.

Organised by the Namibia Nature Foundation, the symposium provided a collaborative platform to review current knowledge of marine systems, research gaps and explore how science can better inform policy and management. Discussions covered key topics including sustainable fisheries, seabird and marine mammal conservation, climate change impacts, and the role of the blue economy in supporting coastal livelihoods.

Participants emphasised Namibia’s long-standing commitment to ocean protection, noting that the country’s marine environment underpins food security, economic opportunity, and cultural identity. The Ocean in Focus Symposium reinforced the need for evidence-based approaches, showing how science and community engagement are essential to safeguard Namibia’s Atlantic coastal ecosystems.

By creating space for dialogue and shared learning, the symposium marked an important milestone in national efforts to foster sustainable ocean governance, a commitment that builds on Namibia’s broader role in marine conservation on both continental and global stages.
