The Status of Threatened Seabirds in NIMPA

The latest seabird census (2024/2025) reveals a worrying decline in the breeding populations of three of Namibia’s most iconic seabirds: the African Penguin, Cape Gannet, and Bank Cormorant.

These species, which breed along the southern coastline within the Namibian Islands’ Marine Protected Area (NIMPA), face mounting threats from overfishing, climate change, and habitat loss.

In recognition of World Penguin Day, which was on 25 April 2025, we highlighted the urgent need for awareness, stronger policies, and conservation action to protect these seabirds and the ecosystems they call home.

View the infographic and data on the Namibian Foundation for the Conservation of Seabirds (NAMCOB) website to learn more and see how you can contribute to their survival.
